Opponent feedback

Feedback on the second draft

Each student has been assigned a seminar paper written by another student and needs to act as opponent. The role of the opponent is to provide constructive feedback on the assigned seminar paper, especially by pointing points out aspects for clarification. When writing the comments, consider at least the following:

  • Is the topic of the paper well-defined?
  • Are the background and the main challenges about the topic clearly presented?
  • Are the main ideas appropriately discussed? Is there anything requiring clarification?
  • What is the main contribution of the paper? Is it sufficiently emphasized in the text?
  • Could structure, presentation, illustrations or language be improved?
  • Are the references adequate in terms of both quantity and quality?
  • How could the paper be further improved?

Submitting feedback

Access the following page in Rubyric:

You should be able to access the submission of another student (i.e., the one for whom you will be the opponent). If not, please promptly contact the course staff at t-110.5191@list.aalto.fi. Download the related submission (in case of multiple submissions consider only the latest submitted version) and read the seminar paper. Then, write your feedback according to the questions outlined above. The feedback must be submitted through Rubyric. To this end, click on the "Create review" button that appears next to the submission files once you move the mouse in the related row. As an alternative, you can select the "Create new review" item in the drop-down menu that opens by clicking on the down arrow next to the submission. After that, click on the "Finalize" tab and add your feedback text then save. Now the status of the review should appear as "finished". You can edit the text as many times as you wish before the deadline, just remember to save your changes. The deadline for submitting the feedback is Thursday April 2 at 23:59 EEST.

Feedback on the final paper

The opponent also provides feedback on the final paper. Such a feedback consists of questions that are asked right after the corresponding presentation at the seminar day. Questions should mostly focus on clarifications about technical aspects and (or) choices made in the seminar paper (e.g., organization of the related work, methodology used in case original results are presented).

Providing feedback

The final seminar paper of the student you are opponent for can be retrieved from Rubyric:

You should be able to access the submission of another student. As there were a few students who did not submit the final paper, you may not be able to give your opponent feedback during the seminar day. Thus, if you cannot access the paper of any other student in Rubyric, that implies that you do not have to provide any feedback. In any case, you are still encouraged to actively ask questions to any student. Remember to consider only the latest submitted version in case of multiple submissions of the final seminar paper. Should you have problems with Rubyric, promptly contact the course staff at t-110.5191@list.aalto.fi.
