T-110.5191 Seminar on Internetworking P (5 cr)

Assignments

Seminar paper

The seminar paper should discuss the assigned topic according to the guidelines pointed out in the lecture about writing and presenting technical content. Detailed instructions and comments are provided by the tutor.

Format

The technical report must be typeset in LaTeX, based on the template for the Seminar on Internetworking course. The basic style rules are those in the IEEE Editorial Style Manual. More detailed instructions are provided by the English teacher and your tutor. For additional resources, see also the additional reading material. The final seminar paper should be between 5 and 8 pages in double-column format.

Procedure

The submission of the seminar paper takes place in three different phases.

During the first two phases, a draft of the seminar paper is submitted. After the submission, you will receive individual feedback about the technical content from your tutor. You will also receive individual feedback about writing from the English teacher during the corresponding classes. After receiving the feedback, you will need to revise the seminar paper accordingly and submit it again. Draft versions of the report should be in single-column format, which is the default one produced by the LaTeX course template.

During the last phase, the final version of the seminar paper is submitted. It should include the feedback received by the tutor, the English teacher, and the opponent. The final version of the report should in double-column format, which can be accomplished by providing the cameraready option to the LaTeX document class.

Presentation

The presentation should overview the content of the seminar paper and focus on a few selected aspects (either existing research works or original results).

Format

There is no pre-specified format for the slides, so you can use any template and software (e.g,, LaTeX or Powerpoint). The only recommendation is to make sure that the slides are easy to read when shown with a projector. Due to software-related constraints of the computer used during the seminar day, the format of the submitted slides should be one of the following: PDF, Powerpoint or HTML. In the latter case, the HTML presentation should be self-contained (i.e., it should not need an Internet connection to be shown) and should be submitted as an archive (in zip or gzip/bzip format) with all the needed files.

Practicalities

The slides should target a presentation lasting for at most 15 minutes. It is recommended to practice the presentation in advance and make sure that its duration is between 12 and 14 minutes. As presentation styles are very personal, there is no general recommendation about the number of slides, which are expected to be less than 15 (usually 8 to 13 would work for most people). Addutional advices about the presentation are given in the slides of the lecture about writing and presenting technical content.

Submission instructions

The seminar paper and the related slides must be submitted through Rubyric at the URLs available in slides of the introduction lecture and in the deadline description at the bottom of the page. No other form of submission will be accepted. Should you have problems in accessing Rubyric, promptly contact the course staff at t-110.5191@list.aalto.fi.

Submissions should only consist of a single file, namely, of an archive (in zip or gzip/bzip format). Submissions of the seminar paper should containing both the paper itself as a PDF document and the corresponding LaTeX source. Slides should be submitted in PDF, PowerPoint or HTML format.

You can submit multiple times in Rubyric until the deadline expires. In case multiple submissions are present, only the latest submission will be considered. Deadlines are hard: they are set in Rubyric and are automatically enforced by the system. Do not wait until the very last minute, but rather submit the exercise well in advance (e.g., at least 4 hours before the deadline). It is recommended to submit early and multiple times before the deadline as you work on the seminar paper and the slides.
