3.1. Choosing the topic (that is, signing up)
Each participant chooses a topic that is related to the focus of the seminar. The topic will be chosen during the first meeting or within a couple of days of the first meeting. To choose a topic send an e-mail to iwork@tml.hut.fi. By choosing a topic you sign up for the course. Also write a short abstract about the topic which you suggest. The topics can be reserved from the day the course begins. General guidelines for choosing a topic are given in the first meeting.
More detailed instructions are found here.
3.2. Co-operation with the tutor and opponent
Tutors have prepared sessions containing some topics and suggestions on how to handle them. Each participant will contact his tutor at least four times. Tutor provides authorative guidence for the student in writing the paper and preparing the presentation. The student will present the tutor the following for comments and suggestions.
- A tentative, containing:

- A first draft
- Send it to:
- your tutor
- iwork@tml.hut.fi
- The final draft
- Send it to:
- your tutor
- iwork@tml.hut.fi

- A corrected version of the paper before the seminar
- Send it to:
- your tutor
- iwork@tml.hut.fi
- your opponent
After the seminar, a corrected version based on the comments of the tutor and the opponent is submitted for publishing.
The tutor will comment within one week after every transmission. If you turn in your paper early, you can negotiate with your tutor if he or she could give you his/hers comments earlier.
The opponent shall comment on the paper twice and give comments on the author's presentation at the conference. More detailed instructions are found here.
3.3. Researching the paper
Each participant studies his selected topic in detail. The study should not be solely based on references given by the organizers, the participants are expected to search references on their own.3.4.Writing the paper
Each participant shall write a research paper in English, about 10-15 pages on a chosen topic. The paper will be written in PDF. You may also make an abstract of your paper in HTML, the World Wide Web hypertext language for the publication on the web. Providing the abstract in HTML is common practice when publishing articles electronically, and it makes it easier for people interested in your topic to get an overview of the paper without opening the PDF file. There will be a short course on writing and presenting scientific papers in English in February (check the schedule).
In order to maintain a consistent layout, a LaTeX template is provided. More information about the layout can be found here.
Notice also, that refinements to the paper are done after the seminar.
4. The Conference
At the conference, all participants will present their work either by giving a full presentation or by giving a shorter presentation in the poster session. On the second student meeting a presentation was held by Marcin Dobrucki on how to present and oppone a paper. The slides can be found here. The same slides were used 2001 on the course T-110.501 Seminar on internetworking. There will be a lap top that can show Powerpoint- and PDF-slides, a projector, an overhead projector, a white board and a flap board.4.1. Presentation
Most participants give a presentation on their topics to the other participants. The presentations is 20 to 30 minutes in length and is given in English. The best papers will be presented at Sjökulla in a two-day seminar. Attending the seminar in Sjökulla is mandatory.4.2. Poster Session

Poster presentations will last from 5 to 10 minutes. They include the most important points in the area of the topic.
- have not reached the limit of scientific paper
- have had problems with timetable
- have some other problems
Poster sessions are a common practice in scientific conferences. The course staff will decide which papers will be presented.
5. Opponing
Each participant will act as an opponent to a presentation of a chosen seminar paper.
The opponent will receive two versions of a paper; one a couple of weeks and the second a couple of days before the seminar.
The opponent shall read the first version of the paper and point out any visible mistakes and make a couple of questions regarding the paper to help with the finishing touches of the paper. Send the comments according to the schedule to
- the author and
- iwork@tml.hut.fi.
At the seminar, the opponent should be prepared to make two questions or comments.
Within two weeks of the seminar the opponent shall write about a half a page of comments (see the schedule). The comments should include the following:
These comments are sent to
- Strengths of the paper and presentation
- Things to improve in the paper and presentation
- Things to fix in the paper
- Proposed grade
- the author of the paper
- the author's tutor
- iwork@tml.hut.fi
You should always rememder when you are criticizing someones work or your work is criticized that the critique is about the work you have done that time, not about yourself or your future work. Critics is for learning, not for blaming.
On the second student meeting, a presentation on how to oppone and present a paper was held by Marcin Dobrucki. The slides are found here. The same slides were used 2001 on the course T-110.501 Seminar on internetworking.
6. Refining the paper
The paper should be fixed and refined after the seminar according to the comments at the seminar and the tutor's and opponent's comments after the seminar.
7. Grades

The course staff will meet at the end of the conference to decide the grades.
