01 Jun 11 This course exists no longer
This course exists no longer. The new replacement course is T-110.5121 Mobile Cloud Computing (5 cr) starting in autumn 2011.
03 Jan 11 Final results published
You may find final results from Results page. There are no changes compared to Preliminary results. Credits will be moved to your account by the end of this week. If you have any questions, please come to visit in A122 or send an email. Also the remaining posters from session 3 are available in my room. Thank you for participating in the course. If you wish to continue exploring these topics, I recommend courses T-110.5130 and T-110.5190 that will be run on Spring 2011.
22 Dec 10 Preliminary results published
You may find the preliminary results from Results page. All components (poster, abstract, lecture diary) were evaluated with 1-5 scale. If you got 4 and 3 from poster and abstract, lecture diary decided your final grade. Other student's poster grade in most cases followed my review but there were a few exceptions. Teacher's grade is decisive. You may contact me to ask details about the review. Final grades will be moved to OSR on the first week of January.
10 Dec 10 Session 3 posters removed
Due to Christmas party I had to remove the last posters. They are in my room A122 and you may pick them up any time you want. However, next week I am out out office on Monday and Tuesday but after that available. I checked also that all posters are now in Optima, so you can find them from there for your Lecture diaries.
07 Dec 10 Missing posters
Two posters are still missing from last week¿s session, please add them to Optima in PDF format asap. Also the posters that will be presented tomorrow, can be stored to Optima at once you have printed them.
07 Dec 10 Please give feedback!
Course feedback questionaire is now open on page linked below. The feedback form is open 7.12.2010-10.1.2011. It takes a few minutes to fill in the form. Thank you for your feedback!
01 Dec 10 New deadline and Session 3 instructions
It was agreed today that extended abstracts, lecture diaries and possible absence reports must be submitted to Optima by 17.12. Posters should be uploaded to Optima asap after your poster session. Lecture diaries on poster sessions should have a review on 4 posters, each approx. 10 lines and grading proposal. Regarding Poster Session 3 on 8.12: because 6.12 is a public holiday, you should send your poster to posters@niksula.hut.fi latest on Tuesday 7.12 morning or already this week. We will have 10 presentations in the last session.
17 Nov 10 Poster instructions
One example poster from last year has been added to Optima/Posters. This in in landscape style, but I would prefer portrait format this year. The example includes quite a lot of text, even less is better. There was a question if there are drawing boards available next to posters. I try to organize a few, and they can be used by anyone. Just to repeat the procedure for poster sessions: 1) Before 16.15: Place your poster on your wall in the lobby. 1 to 1, 2 to 2 etc. 2) 16.15-17: Short (5-7 min each) oral presentation by each pair in T2 3) 17.15-18: Research bazaar in the lobby, first round, 4x10 min, 10 min for each poster 4) 18.15-19: Research bazaar in the lobby. second round, 4x10 min, 10 min for each poster Pick up two posters from both rounds for your Lecture diary. And remember add your Lecture diary from both LTE and Mobile Computing lectures NOW!
11 Nov 10 Optima: PPT template uploaded and Lecture diary instructions
You may find now also PPT format (97/2003) poster template from Optima. Regarding the Lecture diary, a few hints. Due to bug in Optima, you cannot edit your Lecture diary afterwards, but you can just add new entries. For that reason it is better to write your diary in some text editor and then copy paste the whole text to Optima's Lecture diary. Your diary should include the following data: T-110.5120 Learning Diary Student number: Student's name: Date of poster session/lecture: Topics covered: Please note that the purpose of this diary is to document your learning, not the content of the lectures or posters. 1. What were the main points of the posters/lectures (briefly)? 2. What did you learn? 3. How could you apply what you learned? What new ideas or thoughts did you get from the lectures? 4. What remained unclear/confusing? 5. What grade (0-5) would you give to the poster and why? Select four posters from each session (This is valid only for posters, you will have a chance to give feedback to lecturers via the course feedback form)
09 Nov 10 Poster topics assigned
All poster topics have now been assigned, see Poster topics assigned page. Numbers have been updated to include own topics. Each session has 8 or 9 posters, and each poster is presented shortly (~5 min) and preferably only verbally before research bazaar is opened. In the bazaar you have 10 min time for each poster and you have to report the main content of four posters in your diary.
05 Nov 10 Poster topics mainly assigned
Most of the students have now been allocated to topics, see Poster topics assigned. Most of you got 1st or 2nd choice but in a few cases I had to use my own evaluation. I hope you can live with these. If not, please contact me early next week. Note that currently all sessions are well balanced taken into account your own topics. Topics with bold are still free. There are still a few students who have registered but I cannot see your name in Doodle. Please add your name to Doodle or come to discuss with me latest after next lecture. I changed today Optima Lecture diary settings, and now you hopefully can also edit your old diary. Go to test it before the first real lecture.
03 Nov 10 Doodle page opened, slides updated and other information
1) Poster assignments can be done now in Doodle: http://www.doodle.com/c6t5yziwuzvgacrw Add your surnames and 3 favourites OR your own topic (confirm topic by email with me). Please try to avoid topics that have been already reserved. If you have not found pair yet, add then your name alone and your favourites. If there are several similar cases, I can connect you together offline. Or you may join as a 3rd member to some group. 2) Introduction slides have been added to Lectures/3.11. 3) If you just recently registered in Oodi, you will not have yet Optima account but I will add them tomorrow. Please check also that you have registered in Oodi if you cannot see Optima account after tommorrow. 4) If you know already now that you will miss some lecture or poster session, please send an email. BR, Yrjö (yrjo.raivio at tkk.fi)
02 Nov 10 Poster topics updated
Due to high number of students, new topics have been added to Poster topics suggested section under Mobile computing title. Also a few changes have been made for the old topics. Note that you may always propose your own topic.
27 Oct 10 Course update
Next Generation Wireless Networks course starts on Wednesday 3.11 16.15 in T2. During the first lecture course content and practical issues are presented. Participation in every lecture is obligatory. If you are not able to join some lecture, you must write an additional diary about the lecture or poster presentations. Course will be executed by participating in each lecture and poster session, by creating and presenting a 4 page conference paper and poster, and keeping a lecture diary. There is NO exam. Grading is based on your conference paper and poster quality. The conference paper and poster are done in PAIRS. Preliminary poster topics are now listed under Poster topics suggested section. You may also propose your own topic. In addition to course books, more information can be found from Additional reading section. Topics can be requested after the 1st lecture. It is essential that you (also) participate in the first session that we will get the course running in proper way. The Assignment topics will also be briefly presented then. If you have any additional questions, please contact the lecturer.

05 Jan 10 grades
I've posted the grades for the course in the results section on the course's Noppa pages. Grading was based on the poster, the way it was presented, and the extended abstract. Peer reviews in the learning diaries were also evaluated to confirm that there was indeed a consensus with the my grades and yours. Overall, I was positively surprised with the level of work you have done, which is reflected also by the relatively high grades on average. I also appreciated the fact that many of you chose an own topic showing initiative and genuine interest. I felt a good atmosphere during the poster sessions and I'd like to thank you all for participating. Best Regards, Matti
14 Dec 09 extended abstracts
Please, upload the abstracts (and also essays compensating for absence from class) to the Optima instead of sending them by email.
16 Nov 09 Information about poster printing
I've added information about poster printing in the Noppa page "Preparing a poster and abstract".
13 Nov 09 Finalizing the schedule (again...)
Based on the current poll results, none of the proposed alternative dates is suitable for all of you. It would be unfair for students that would be able to attend the sessions according to the original schedule, if they had to miss sessions due to change of dates. Therefore, we will stick to the originally planned dates. After all, those dates were published already before any of you registered. I have made some changes to the contents of the sessions so that in the current schedule all the presenters on 24.11. should be available. This is based on the emails I've received from you requesting for absence.
12 Nov 09 moving 24.11. session
There are so many of you to whom the session on 24.11. poses a problem that I would suggest moving it. I propose three dates: Thu 26.11., Mon 30.11., or Thu 3.12. In order to reschedule so that it fits your time tables as well as possible, I would ask you to register by tomorrow (Friday) in the attached Doodle those dates that would be ok for you. Please, leave the box unticked only if you really have other mandatory commitments. On Friday afternoon, I will look at the poll results and make the change in schedule and notify you.
11 Nov 09 still about schedule...
It seems that there are more of you who cannot make it on the Nov 24. session. So, before I again redo the schedule I ask all of you that cannot attend that session (or any other one) to send me email so that I can finalize the schedule. I'm aware that many of you take other courses that have also deadlines. However, I cannot adjust the schedule to take into account everyone's preferences, so please don't send me further emails stating that you are very busy on the week that you have your presentation.
11 Nov 09 revised schedule
I've revised the poster session schedule. I allowed some of you not to be present at the November 24. session which required some changes to the original schedule. So, those of you, please go and check that your poster is now scheduled for another day.
11 Nov 09 info about poster session
Some of you have asked more information about how the poster session will proceed. So, the idea is that you and your partner will stand next to your poster and explain it to whomever at that moment is interested in it. I will personally go through each of the posters and, thus, discuss with each one of you about your poster. The other students not presenting a poster at that session should similarly go around and talk to the poster presenters and make notes. So, there will not be scheduled powerpoint presentations. However, in order to make life easier for yourself, you can (and should) prepare a short introduction to your poster which helps to initiate the interactive conversation.
10 Nov 09 schedule for poster sessions finalized
The poster topics have been now assigned to the four sessions. Check out the schedule on the Lectures page.
10 Nov 09 preparing the extended abstract
Please, refer e.g. to SIGCOMM's poster session web page (link attached) for examples about how to write a nice abstract for the poster. They are two pages but nevertheless you can get a good idea about how to write such a short paper.
09 Nov 09 topics assigned
Topics have now been assigned to almost all participants. Have a look at the Noppa page "Poster topics assigned" to see which topic you got. If you don't know how to get in touch with your partner, send me email and I'll connect you. I will post the schedule later this week.
05 Nov 09 using your own published material in the course
If you are a PhD student and would like to use your own publication as the extended abstract (and thus poster topic) for this course, please note the following university policy: You cannot get credits for work that you are going to use as part of your PhD thesis. If you are in such a situation, contact me so that we can have a discussion about the available options.
05 Nov 09 missing a class
There were several persons asking what happens if you miss a class/poster session. It is possible to miss one poster session or class if you have a good reason. As a compensation, I would ask you to prepare an essay of (min) four pages on one of the poster topics presented in the session or, in case you missed one of the two lectures, on the lecture topic. In addition, similarly to all other students, I expect you to return your learning diaries on the missed poster session as well by having a look at the posters and abstracts (will be posted online) afterwards.
04 Nov 09 topic selection
Before the Friday dl, please register five topics (not all contrary to what I said in the lecture) in the order of preference in the Doodle. There's an example entry shown. The topic numbers can be found in the Noppa page listing the topics.
28 Oct 09 some infromation about the course
This fall, the course will be run as follows: Students will prepare posters and abstracts on a chosen topic in groups of two. These posters will be presented during poster sessions. More detailed information is given in Noppa pages and during the introductory lecture on Wed 4.11. Please, have a look already at the proposed topics before next Wednesday. You are also encouraged to propose your own topic if none of the listed ones seems attractive to you or if you have specific knowledge on a related topic.
27 Oct 09 First session on Wednesday 4.11.
The first session will be held on Wednesday 4.11.
