20 Feb 15 Lab A3 IPv6 problems with OpenStack
We have noticed that OpenStack sometimes misbehaves with IPv6. The part "2. Rebuild your network¿ might not succeed in some cases. The suggested "neutron port-update¿ -command does not work properly in some cases. This means that traffic between virtual machines using IP addresses allocated by rardvd is not allowed. Due to this it is possible to get points from part 2.4 without working configuration if your configuration seems to be correct. This bug should not affect other parts of the assignments. Again we apologize for the inconvenience.

28 Jan 15 Rounds A2 & B2 online
Rounds A2 and B2 have been updated for the OpenStack environment and you can start doing the assignments. The first assignment was relatively easy, however from now on you need to do extensive self-study to complete the assignments. Next week (6) is going to be a reception week, so if you have any questions about the assignments, please come to see the assistants at Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. More info about reception sessions in Noppa. Also remember to reserve your next demonstration early from the appointment system!
26 Jan 15 OpenStack problems fixed
Our storage unit failed this morning and it can not be repaired. We got new unit but it is impossible to recover the data from the previous unit. This means you need to create all of your virtual instances again. Networks you have created were not affected by this unfortunate series of events. Running instances are not required for the demo this week if you are able to explain what you did based on your notes. Apologies for the extra trouble.
26 Jan 15 Technical issues & demos
Unfortunately there are some issues with the OpenStack servers, and as a consequence instances remain unreachable. Admins are working on resolving the issue as soon as they can, but if the problem persists you should be prepared to demonstrate your solution without access to the instances. Make sure you can demonstrate your work on another machine than the OpenStack instance. Two Ubuntu machines are available during the demos and you will also be able to access echo. Sorry for the inconvenience.
26 Jan 15 Demo location A145, computers in demo
The demo sessions this week are arranged at CS-building room A145. The reservation system had wrong place marked. There is Niksula computer available in the demo session. If you have any files stored either on Paniikki (C106) computers or at kekkonen.niksula.hut.fi, those files are available on the demo computer. Alternatively you can use your own laptop, but we have to warn you that the WLAN in demo room is rather bad. Remember to come in time to your demo!
19 Jan 15 Help sessions this week and reservation for demo sessions
Help sessions for first assignment are arranged this week. For detailed schedule see page ¿Receptions¿. You can come to ask help without reserving time beforehand. The reservation system for round 1 demo sessions opens on a Wednesday 21.1. at 18:00. Try to reserve demo time soon, so you can get one that fits your schedule. Demo sessions are arranged 26.1.-30.1. at CS-building room A145. Everyone should have received email notification from the appointment reservation system. If you did not receive email, contact course staff as soon as possible. The appointment systems shows appointments using the time zone of your computer, so check that it is set to GMT+2. If you can not see any open demo times, ensure that you are looking for correct week.
15 Jan 15 Another OpenStack failure
We had another failure in OpenStack today, and the service was unusable for about two hours. It was not possible to create new virtual machines during this time. Also, reception times are available if you need some tips from the assistants.

28 Oct 13 On the reservation of demo times
Hi, please reserve the demo times early. We have had requests of adding more demo slots because Monday slots have expired. This seems rather odd because we reminded of booking your demo on Friday. In the following rounds, we are not going add any extra slots. Rather than waiting for Sunday (and for the Monday slots to expire), please reserve your demo time as soon as they are available (Wed 18:00). Then start planning your work accordingly in schedule. So, your process for this course is totally wrong if you start doing the exercises on Sunday evening and hope that there will still be a slot in the end of the following week.

The results of the second round are now published in Noppa.
11 Oct 13 Review of round two

For the next round, please make your demo reservations in time. The demo times will be published on Wednesday and the fastest take the best times. We have heard some excuses on why demo times were reserved too late or why some students wanted to postpone their demo times (because they did not start doing the assignment in time). Starting from round three, please be prepared to bring a signed medical (or other official) statement on why you failed to complete the assignment in two weeks. After all, you're training for the industry and excuses won't be tolerated there either. Having said this, we wish the best of luck to the next round, we have really seen nice demos throughout the week!
10 Oct 13 Virtual machines back online
The problems with virtual machines have been fixed and everything should be working again. All the files you had saved to your virtual machines should be there, but all the running configuration has been lost (for example if you had configured ipv6 addresses with the "ip" command, those are lost). Please let us know if you have problems with virtual machines.

10 Sep 13 Clarifications on the course organization
Hi, the course organization seemed to be still a bit unclear, so let me clarify a few things. The course consists of... 1. Two optional lectures organized on fixed times (today was the first and next one is next week Tuesday) 2. Optional reception sessions (only the weeks are fixed) 3. Mandatory demo sessions (only the weeks are fixed) 4. Optional demo for the extra assignment (only the week is fixed) We don't organize a lecture for each assignment separately because they should be documented quite well and plenty of reading material exists online. If you have questions, please book a reception time from the assistants, ask in IRC or send email. Every second week is reserved for (a) receptions and always the following week for (b) demonstrations (and then the cycle starts again for the next assignment). During these weeks you can meet an assistant privately for an half an hour and (a) ask help for the assignment if you need it and (b) demonstrate a working solution for the assignment. To be flexible with both the students and assistants (who are also students), the exact meeting time can be scheduled using a ubercool time reservation system that will be published in the end of this week.

10 Sep 13 Choosing of course paths in Oodi
Hi, we have added course paths A and B to Oodi. You can choose which one to take for a 5 credit course or choose both for a 10 credit version of the course. Please fill in your choice in oodi.aalto.fi, so that we can estimate the total number of students on each path. P.S. Slides are now uploaded to Noppa in Lectures section.
10 Sep 13 Introduction lectures
Dear students, the introduction lectures will be held today (10.9) and next week Tuesday (17.9) in T2 at 16-18. Today, we cover the administrative aspects of the course (most likely in a single hour) and next week Linux command line basics (two hours). The slides will be posted in the Lectures section in Noppa in case you can't make it. We recommend signing up for the course in Oodi even if you would be unsure about your participation. This way, you get acccess to your virtual machines to get an early start with the assignments. Welcome to the course!
