We have published scores from round four in noppa and also the pleminary grades from the mandatory four rounds. The grades are pleminary because you can still upgrade your score by doing the extra round. The receptions will be in the beginning and demos in the end of next week (28). There will be a possibility to complain about the grading in few weeks.
26 Nov 10 Assignment for the Extra Round
The exercises for the round 5 are finally published. This time we don't provide so much hints in the assignment itself, but you may use our reception sessions next week. The times will be available on Friday afternoon. Points for the different sections will be published on Saturday at the same time with the grade limits.

19 Nov 10 Round four demo times
Round four demo times for next week (47) are now available in the appointment system: https://playground.cs.hut.fi/kaiku/appointments/ Please book your time well in advance. You can see only 12 hours in advance and fastest get the best times. On the last round, some students missed the weekly deadline and will be given some penalty points for this. On this round, there will be a more severe penalty on the score, so please make it in time. The demo slot will be half an hour. To guarantee that you will make it in time, feel free to copy paste to command line from notes. It is not necessary to type all of things by hand.
16 Nov 10 Round 4 instruction page updated.
The instruction page for Round 4 i.e. IPv6 has been updated in Noppa.
14 Nov 10 Reception Times, Round 4
Reception times are finally available in Taru. The first times are tomorrow and the last ones on Friday 19th. Please use our receptions, if you encounter problems with the exercises.
04 Nov 10 Demo times for round three
Demo times for round three are available: https://playground.cs.hut.fi/kaiku/appointments/ Remember to reserve your demo time as early as possible. Time window is half a day and you can only see times after this.
01 Nov 10 Changes on the third assignment (email server)
There's some changes in the third assignment regarding to the packaging and sendmail was changed to exim. If you did already the assignment using the earlier instructions, it is also acceptable.
31 Oct 10 No lecture
Noppa claims that there is a lecture tomorrow but we don't have any. The lecture time was reserved just in case we need it, but at the moment we don't see any need.
26 Oct 10 Reception times for round three
Reception times for round three (week 44) are available again in the appointment scheduler: https://playground.cs.hut.fi/kaiku/appointments/round/list/
22 Oct 10 Points for round two

16 Oct 10 round three
To clarify, the next exercise round is lab assignment 3: * week 44: receptions * week 45: demos * (week 46: some more demos) I'll correct the overview page as soon as I have time.
13 Oct 10 On extra network interfaces
We suggest that you use the 192.168.0.0/24 network for the extra interfaces (eth1, eth2) to avoid problems with networking.
08 Oct 10 Demo sessions for round 2
Demo sessions for round two are now published in the appointment system: https://playground.cs.hut.fi/kaiku/ The demo session time is 45 minutes on this round. Please rehearse the demo beforehand to meet the time limit and to minimize the probability for the inevitable demo effects. If you are participating both courses, you need to reserve two demo sessions.
08 Oct 10 Please update your /etc/network/interfaces
We recommend that you add the line "auto eth0" to the file /etc/network/interfaces on your virtual machines to prevent potential access problems. An example file follows: # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface allow-hotplug eth0 auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp
05 Oct 10 Results of the first round and about reception/demo times
Results for the first round are published in noppa. There will be a reception time in December to complain about the results. You can reserve two 15 mins reception times from noppa for this week. We can increase the number of times if is needed. Demo times will be published on Friday.
01 Oct 10 exercises and sessions for round 2
There may be small improvements today to make assignments of round 2 a bit easier. Nothing big, just some minor fixes because the course started using Debian instead of Fedora this year. Reception times for round 2 for next week have been published in the time reservation system. Demo times will appear during next week. Couple of hints on making life easier with Linux. If you want to disable password authentication with "sudo", modify the "labrat" line in /etc/sudoers as follows: labrat ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL If you want to run commands such as "ifconfig" or "route" with your normal user account, type the following command once per each virtual machine: echo 'export PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin' >>.bashrc Then you must log out and log in again to make the changes effective.
27 Sep 10 demo times
Remember to reserve a demo time for the first round if you didn't do it already.
22 Sep 10 participation for the course is closed
Participation for the course is closed in Oodi. All accounts have been created and distributed by email. One account had a failing email address. Please contact course personnel if you have trouble with your account.
20 Sep 10 Please reserve an appointment early!
Due to practical limitations, reservation of reception and demo times needs to be done at least 12 hours before the appointment. We may offer some last minute opportunities in future, but they should be considered exceptional. We are sorry for this slight inconveniece.
20 Sep 10 time reservation system
The username for the time reservation system is your student account (letter is in caps) and the password is the same as for virtual machines.
19 Sep 10 demo times for lab 1
Demo times for lab exercise 1 can be reserved now. Students who take both of the lab courses should reserve only a single demo time (for either course) because the first assignment is the same on both courses.
17 Sep 10 Reservation of Assistant Times
Reception Appointment times for assignment one can be reserved now. They will start next week, so be sure to check the times with yourself quickly. We apologise for keeping you on the short notice. Demo times for the first assignment will be published later on this weekend, and they will take place on week 39. The times for the other assignments are published at a later time. Please reserve your appointments from Taru Appointment System. Your account name is your student id number (letters are uppercase). The password is the same as we sent you for the virtual machines. https://playground.cs.hut.fi/kaiku/ Appointments for demo sessions are *mandatory*. So you have to reserve a time for the demo if you want to pass the assignment. Appointments for receptions are optional. You don't have reserve reception time if you don't need any help from the assistants. Cancel your appointment time in time if you cannot make it. Failing to show up can affect your grade from the course. If you have a good excuse, your appointment can be rescheduled. Just remember that you'll just get what is left from others, so please double check your appointment time before reserving it! Cancellations are to be done by email for the time being. All appointments are in room A120 of T-building. If you arrive early, sit down for a while on the sofas and wait for your turn. P.S. Kaiku Portal is a brand new thing and under active development. If you notice something weird or get errors, please let us know. Currently the certificate is self-signed, but in a few days we will switch to a known CA and also Shibboleth authentication. For the security enthusiasts: public key fingerprint is 53 12 FE A5 85 80 87 3D F7 10 1A 06 44 A3 C1 75 56 8B 29 BE.
16 Sep 10 course schedule
This is the coarse-grained schedule for the reception hours and demos: Lab assignment 1: * week 38: receptions * week 39: demos Lab assignment 2: * week 40: receptions * week 41: demos Lab assignment 3: * week 44: receptions * week 45: demos * (week 46: some more demos) Lab assignment 4: * week 46: receptions * week 47: demos Extra and failed assignments: * week 48: demos (no reception) Demos of lab assignment 3 may be scattered on two weeks because one of the assistants is absent on week 45. Also, we may have to reschedule demos on the week following the demo if assistants are on sick leave. Reception time means that you reserve time (half an hour) from assistant to help you in problems related to the assignment round in question. The assistant won't solve the whole assignment for you, but will give you some hints especially if you're stuck with something. The reception time is not the right time to start learning basics of Linux, but rather you should do this on your own time. Demo time means that you reserve a time slot (one hour) from the assistant to demonstrate the assignment in room A120 on T-building. The assistant will ask you the questions written in the assignments and couple of extra ones to make sure that you have understood what you were doing. Be prepared for the demo, arrive in time and even rehearse before coming to the event. You have just one hour before the next student arrives. All of the reservations will be handled using a web site that will be published tomorrow.
15 Sep 10 using course virtual machines outside of campus
You can access the virtual machines only from the campus network. If you want to work with them from e.g. home, you need to login through a computer located in TKK network. Such machines include kosh.hut.fi or kekkonen.cs.hut.fi, for example.
14 Sep 10 missing account email for virtual machines?
We noticed that our system sent account information successfully only to cc.hut.fi addresses due to the mail server configuration. We will resend the missing account information by email today.
14 Sep 10 accounts for virtual machines completed
The accounts for the course virtual machines were created and sent by email to the students that have registered using Oodi. The email contains your account password and instructions on SSH access. The account information was sent to the email address found in Oodi. If you didn't receive an email, please first check what is your email address in Oodi and only then contact course personel. If you register later to the course, there will be some delay in creating the accounts for you. We informed about this on the first lecture. We recommend that you test the account as soon as possible. You can also start with the first exercise. We will update course schedule in Noppa during this week.
10 Sep 10 oodi
The account information for virtual machines will be sent to your email address defined at oodi.tkk.fi. Remember to register to oodi by the end of this week to obtain the account. If you register later, there will be a delay in activating the virtual machine.
10 Sep 10 access to virtual machines
The virtual machines are installed. You should get an email describing ssh access to your dedicated virtual machines on Monday 13.9. Course contact information: Datacommunications software: T-110.5100 at tkk.fi Information security: T-110.5200 at tkk.fi (Some people reported that @ list.hut.fi was not working)
