Signing up is done by registering in Oodi. In addition, the first lecture is mandatory. You will not be accepted to the course if you have not signed up and are not present on the first lecture.
The aim of the course is to gather practical experience from different situations and problems related to data communications software. The course deals with analyzing network protocols, configuring network components, and reading networking standards.
The prerequisites for this course are T-110.2100 and T-110.4100. Other parallel courses offered by Electrical engineering department are ok. You will also need some some Unix/Linux experience, since you will need to use many command-line tools.
The extent of the course is 4 credits. It consists of individual laboratory assignments and students must pass 4 of them in order to pass the course. Each assignment is a laboratory work and you will need to demonstrate each assignment. The demos are scored by course personnel. It is recommended that students familiarize themselves with the subject of an assignment beforehand, so that the assignment can be finished within reasonable time. Be aware, that the assignments vary in difficulty and amount of work.
The course is graded 0-5. You will need to get at least 75% of points total from the assignments to pass the course. This means, that should you have difficulty getting some of the assignments done, you can still pass the course by doing well in other assignments.
Important: The course is done individually. In the demonstration, you must prove the assistant that you done the assignment yourself. The assistant will ask detailed questions of your completed assignment and you should be able to explain what you have done . Plagiarism (i.e. copying from another source) is not tolerated, and will result in a failed assignment - or worse, failing the whole course, depending on the case . |
Mandatory starting lecture is on Tuesday 7.9.2010 08:15 in T1 .
There is no course book. Each assignment includes references to the material related to that assignment.
If you have your own a laptop, you can use it to work on the assignments. However, you will have to configure three virtual machines by yourself and set up networking between the machines by yourself. Bring your own laptop when you demonstrate the assignment!
Alternatively, each student is given access to three virtual hosts on which the assignments can be completed. The hosts can be accessed remotely.
Announcements will be posted to Noppa portal.
Q: I'm taking both T-110.5100 and T-110.5200. Should I submit Network Tools twice, since it is a part of both courses?
A: No, it cannot be included twice. You must do 4 other assignments in one of the courses.
The assistants for the course are Matti Kemppainen and Artturi Karila. The reception hours are TBD. For questions and comments, always use the address course_codetkk.fi, and not the personal email addresses. This way your message will be read by someone even if one person is absent.
