Review rules

Instruction for Diary review process.

As a part of the course, students need to review diary notes of others. The review process will resemble scientific review process. To review the diaries use the following criteria and answer some questions in it:

  • Reviewer qualification

  • Novelty

  • Technical quality

  • Presentation quality

  • Overall merit

Remember that a diary is not a full scientific paper, thus it cannot cover all the aspects. However, this exact reason does not produce an excuse to treat the work lightly. The grade of reviewed diary will not be dependent on the review score you give, but the grade of reviewer’s diary will be dependent on the quality of his/her review. It means that for each person the grade for diary will be measured based on the quality of the diary of that person (major) as well as quality of review that person produced (minor). Thus, try to review other diaries critically, it will help others to understand their flaws for the final assignment.

Reviewers needs to answer the following questions regarding reviewed diary:

Reviewer qualification. The expertise of the reviewer in the field. How do you consider your self as a reviewer. 5 – Expert, 4 – Good knowledge, 3 – Somehow familiar, 2 – Not so familiar, 1 – Completely unfamiliar.

Novelty. How novel is the work that was done in the diary. Obviously diaries do not produce new contribution, but in terms of Survey paper, the novelty still possible. You should consider how and in what aspect the given text is new to the field. If you aware of other existing survey papers on the topic, what does distinguish this work from another one.

Technical quality. What is the quality of the paper? Does it cover most important aspects of the topic or on the contrary does it omit some important aspects which should be covered. Are the references used for the work are good enough and trustworthy? Does this diary have technical problems or misleads in any aspect? Is it enough covered, remember that 1 page of text (without title and references could cover a lot of high quality information).

Presentation quality. How good is the layout of the paper? Does everything sounds good and spelled correctly? Does it follow required document format and organization?

Overall merit. It is your final score of the diary: 5 – Excellent, 4 – Good, 3 – Satisfactory, 2 – Not so good, 1 – Negative.
