Some course feedbacks still missing
The first bigger batch of course markings was put forward today.
However, two students have not given the feedback, yet. A list of feedback givers is now in the Results page. If you do not see your student number there, please give the feedback before the final DL. Your markings will be done after it. If you fail to give the feedback before the DL, we will come up with something more demanding for you to make up for the mandatory feedback.

10cr course markings
Hopefully the final post about this topic.
The default marking for the 10cr course is two 5cr markings. However, if you need (or want) a single 10cr marking, contact the course mailing list, and we will do your marking that way.

17 Dec 12 |
Course markings 10cr version, update
Contrary to the previously posted information, all 10cr students will receive two 5cr course markings from this course (one from each path, both with the same grade). This provides more flexibility when you fill your course modules.

14 Dec 12 |
Course marking to study records (10cr version)
The course credits can (in special cases) be marked as two 5 credit course markings.
If you did the 10cr version, and need the marking as two 5 credit markings instead of a 10 credit marking (with the same grade) for a reason, please contact the course staff email address.

Completing the course (course feedback)
Assignment rounds are over, and everyone who completed the required amount of assignments got enough points to complete the course.
Remember, giving course feedback is an obligatory part of completing the course. You are not going to get your credits if you do not give it. The question forms are open until January 14, but we recommend you to give the feedback as soon as possible. The feedback forms are accessible via the link below.

The farm is up again. Remember to check the network configs.
|
||
10 Dec 12 |
Accidental reboot of the whole farm
The virtual machine system is down for the moment. As a result of the reboot, the non-permanent network settings are changed to defaults. Remember to check your configurations after you get access.
We will inform you when the system is back up!

Mandatory course feedback
Course feedback questionaire is now open https://into.aalto.fi/display/entik/Course+Feedback. It takes a few minutes to fill in the form. Remember that giving feedback is a mandatory part of completing the course.
Thank you for your feedback!

Assignment B6 (Router) information
Unfortunately, the RouterSim machines are not yet available. We will try to get the setups working before Monday, and we'll keep you informed about their status.
When considering whether to do this assignment, keep in mind that doing this requires you to work in a certain place (probably Paniikki). The LDAP assignment can be done with your virtual machines.

Round 6: extra assignments
The last round assignments are not mandatory IF you have passed all your previous assignments. You can, however, do the extra round to gain more points in order to increase your grade. If you have failed one of the previous assignments, you must do the extra round to finish the course.
If you are going to do the B6 (Router) assignment, please read the top of the subpage and send us the email.
For those of you who are doing the 10cr version of the course, it is possible to do either one of the extra assignments (no need to do both, the points are doubled).

This week's points updated to the result sheet
Grading review by course email or on next Tuesday's staff meeting at 12:00 in Playroom.
In case you feel your points are (unfairly) lower because of the VM problems, please contact the staff. In the future, remember to keep good notes of your work. They will make your (and our) job easier if something similar happens.

Misbehavior with VMs and IPv6
It seems someone has started to advertise routes in the VM network, and it might cause problems with the eth0 interfaces on the machines. Fortunately, there is a workaround for this: protect your eth0s with "sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.eth0.accept_ra=0" on all machines, and remove the extra routes and addresses manually if you see any.

26 Oct 12 |
Reservation opening times (for the rest of the course)
The reception and demo reservations will be opened on (previous week) Fridays at 18:00, starting with the next week's demo reservation today. There will be no more separate announcements, unless there is an exception which will be posted in Noppa news.
|
||
12 Oct 12 |
2nd round results published
You can check your final points from the table in Results page. If you want to review your grading or see some other problems with the results sheet, contact us by email or come to the official grading review session next Tuesday at 12:00 (playroom).
|
||
12 Oct 12 |
Round 3 reception reservation opens today at 4pm
As always, start early and come to get help if you need it. We do NOT provide receptions during the exam week and the demos are then held on week 44 (after the exam week).
|
||
08 Oct 12 |
New demo slots added for the web server assignment
New slots are now available. You can also change your existing one to a new one if you find it more suitable.
|
||
08 Oct 12 |
Remember to arrive to the demo sessions in time
The maximum duration of a demo session is 30 minutes, and the time starts when your reservation starts. This means that if you come late, you have less time to give the demo. Therefore, we suggest you arrive a few minutes early.
If the assistant is late, you have a right to give a 30min demo.
|
||
05 Oct 12 |
Round 2 demo reservation opens today
Available slots become visible at 15:00 today.
Note: There will be more B2 demo slots published after the weekend (one assistant has not input his times yet).
|
||
04 Oct 12 |
Follow the Noppa pages when doing the assignments
Remember to always read the most up-to-date instructions while working on the assignments. The course staff may add hints or minor corrections to the instructions in order to resolve or avoid the most common problems you might have, if many of you struggle with the same things. That will happen without any notice. (In case of any major modifications to the assignments during the course, we will of course post a news item here in Noppa.)
Also check out the new Tips & advice page. There might be something useful for you.

First round results published
This fall's result sheet has been added to the Results page. The sheet is updated after each demo round.
If you have questions about the grading, send e-mail to the course staff mailing list or come to discuss it in the staff's weekly meeting on Tuesdays at 12:00 in Playroom (it is also the official grading review session).
|
||
28 Sep 12 |
Round 2 reception reservation opens today
Round 2 reservations times will be published today at 14:00. Both assignment paths have their own reservation, so make sure you select the correct one when selecting the slots (e.g., A2 receptions are dedicated only to discussion about the E-mail server assignment).
|
||
21 Sep 12 |
Round 1 demos next week, reservation opens today
Next week demo slot reservation opens today at 12:00. Finding a suitable slot from the available ones is your responsibility. Remember, that the demos are mandatory and you will not get points for the round if you do not give the demo.
Try to reserve the slots well in advance, and free that slot and pick another if you cannot make it (then someone else can take it instead). Note that the selections can be modified until 18:00 the previous day, and Friday times are scarce.
|
||
20 Sep 12 |
The reservation system is available again
The problem was fixed yesterday. Use the system normally for Fridays receptions.
|
||
19 Sep 12 |
Open reception tomorrow 10-14 in playroom
Since the reservation system is still unaccessible, we will keep an open reception tomorrow 10:00 - 14:00 in Playroom (A120). If you have any questions about the first assignment, you can come to discuss them then without a reservation.
|
||
19 Sep 12 |
Problems with the reservation system
There are problems in the reservation system, and you cannot log in. The site admin has been notified, and the system should be accessible later today.
|
||
18 Sep 12 |
VM passwords and instructions were sent yesterday
We sent the virtual machine access instructions and passwords to students who had registered in time. Emails were sent to the address you have in your contact information in Oodi.
Also note that you cannot access the machines directly from Niksula's network (e.g. from Paniikki, at least for now, SysAdmins are investigating this). A workaround is to ssh first to, for example, kosh.aalto.fi and access them from there.
In case you did not register in time, or registered but did not receive the email, please contact our mailing list.

18 Sep 12 |
Link for the reservation system
Noppa ate the link, as usual. Here it is!
|
||
18 Sep 12 |
Registration system is available now
Registration system is up and running. This week's optional reception slots are published at 15:00 today. The system should be easy to use, but if you have any problems, please contact the course staff mailing list or use IRC. During reception weeks you can reserve two slots to get help.
Next week's demo slots will be published later this week.
|
||
14 Sep 12 |
Remember to register in Oodi
Tomorrow is the last possible day to register to the course in Oodi. If you fail to register before the deadline your access to virtual machines and the reservation system will be delayed.
Remember to select which path(s) you are going to complete!

Course began
The introduction lecture was given today. If you missed it, you can check the lecture slides and read the information on the course Noppa pages. If you have any questions related to the course, please ask them via the course staff mailing list or use our IRC channel (course assistants will follow the discussion there).
Remember to register before the deadline (15.9.). The registration is needed to give you control of your virtual servers and access to the reservation system.
In order to find out whether you can take this course (if you have passed any of our former lab courses) or you want to take advantage of your earlier work (completed assignments in the former lab courses), please contact the course staff immediately before the beginning of course assignment rounds.
Next week we will continue with the Unix lecture on Tuesday and first round receptions after that (Wed - Fri). We will try to get the reservation system up before the lecture.

Course in the fall 2012
The course Noppa page is under construction for this fall and should be ready by the end of the week.
There are only two lectures in this course, and we hope you will attend at least the (first) introductory one, where we will tell more about this course. The second lecture is about working on a linux command line interface and networking tools useful in this course, so attend this one as well if you're not a guru, yet.
Rest of the course work is based on doing assignments and presenting them in demo sessions. The course can be taken as either 5 or 10 ECTS, depending on the amount of assignments you do. More detailed information will be available here in the course Noppa pages and in the first lecture.
Welcome to the course!
