The aim of the course is to gather practical experience from different situations and problems related to communication software. The course deals with analysing network protocols, configuring network components and reading networking standards.
The prerequisites for this course are T-110.2100 and T-110.4100. Other parallel courses offered by Electrical engineering department are ok.
The extent of the course is 4 credits. It consists of individual laboratory assignments made in pair of students, and students must pass 4 of them in order to pass the course. Each assignment (unless stated otherwise) also contains a pre-assignment, which is returned - like the actual assignments - in paper form. The purpose of the pre-assignments is to force the students to familiarize themselves with the subject before coming into the laboratory class. Assignments are differently demanding (choose assignments that suits your goals).
The course is graded passed/failed. The grade of an assignment can be "passed", "failed" or "boomerang". If an assignment gets the grade "failed", that assignment cannot be done again during this academic year. The grade "boomerang" means that the assignment must be refined and returned again. The refined boomerang will be graded as passed or failed, but not boomerang. In order to get the grade "accepted", you will need 80 percent of the points. A boomerang will result from points between 60 and 80 percent of the maximum.
There is no book or lectures. Each assignment includes references to the material related to that assignment.
The laboratory works will be done in the laboratory class A120 during a reserved timeshift. Reserving work shifts is done at the course WWW pages (the reservations system) after signing up and receiving a group number. A work shift reservation contains all the necessary equipment. You can only reserve one shift per work at a time. Remember to cancel the reservation as early as possible, if you cannot use your reservation.
Registration is compulsory before reservation of work shifts. You need to form a group of two persons and register that group. You can seek for a partner at the newsgroups opinnot.tik.labtyot and opinnot.tik.labworks. You can reserve work shifts after the group registration and getting a group number through course www pages.
Announcements will be posted to the newsgroup: opinnot.tik.labtyot.tiedottaa. Questions can be sent to newsgroups: opinnot.tik.labworks (or in Finnish opinnot.tik.labtyot).
