MPOA

The Multi Protocol Over ATM (MPOA) ”switched-routing”

scheme consists of three components:

• Route Servers, applying network layer routing intelligence to switching in a data link layer transport infrastructure

  • To routers, the route server looks like another router
  • The router server performs the "routing" function for the hosts and edge devices in an MPOA network
  • This is complemented by cut-through forwarding between edge devices/hosts using the underlying ATM connectivity

• Edge Devices, connecting traditional LANs (IEEE 802 etc.) to the MPOA capable network; edge devices serve as points of entry and exit to the ATM network for traditional LAN traffic

• ATM Hosts, the MPOA enhanced LANE hosts directly attached to the MPOA capable network via ATM interfaces
