Cut-through techniques
”Cut-through techniques” is a generic name for various techniques designed to drop packet layer routing into data link layer switching when a data stream is detected
The motivation of various cut-through techniques is based on the following assumptions:
- Multimedia traffic is stream oriented, has high band-width requirements and will constitute the majority of tomorrow’s internet traffic
- Routing is slow and switching is fast
- Future core networks will be ATM-based
=> We can gain an order of magnitude in cost-efficiency by detecting data streams and dropping them to ATM level
These assumptions are not necessarily true
