TML - TELECOMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE

Telecommunications software in general

Telecommunications software (major and minor) consists of two research and educational focus areas:

The structure of the telecommunications software studies is presented in Study Guide chapter 5.5.1, page 43. The complete list of courses offered in telecommunications software (T-110) can be found in the course list. The full-time teaching personnel - in addition to the professors - includes Sanna Suoranta, Ursula Koivikko, Timo Kiravuo and Sasu Tarkoma.

Teaching

In Telecommunications software major/minor the focus is on both basics and on the evolution of Internet technologies as well as design and implementation of IP based systems. In addition to the Internet technologies, we address mobile networks and specifically the development of applications and services in heterogeneous network environments. Focal areas for both Internet and mobile networks are security, service architectures and subjects related to service management such as mobility, quality-of-service and charging.

The selection of courses in datacommunication software (T-110.xxxx courses) is broad: current course list is on laboratory's page.

International Masters' Programmes

Telecommunications software is responsible of the teaching of two international master's progreamme. TKK's own students can apply to be students of NordSecMob - Master's Programme in Security and Mobile Computing, where student change to another Nordic unniversity after one year of studies for another year. The student will get a diploma from both the universities. Check more information from NordSecMob's homepage.

The "Master's Programme in Mobile Computing - Services and Security " is for students that have done their Bachelor's degree abroad.

Master students - Telecommunications software as major

Current

The structure of Telecommunications software major is presented in Computer Science and Engineerings' studyguide (in Finnish: chapter 2.7.5, page 46). The major consist of A2 module of Telecommunications software and one of the A3 modules: Network business, Telecommunicatioons software, and Computer security.

Bachelor thesis instructions of Telecommunications software are Timo Kiravuo, Sakari Luukkainen, Jukka Manner, Sanna Suoranta ja Antti Ylä-Jääski. Their topics are given on Bachelor's seminar page (Bachelor thesis can be written in Finnish and in Swedish). Master's thesis of Telecommunications Software are done both in the industry and in TML's own research projects. If your employer cannot give suitable topic for the thesis, ask a topic from the professors.

Minor in Telecommunications software

The minor in Telecommunications software will provide an overview of the area. Notice, that basic knowledge of information technologies and programming is required also for the minor. The structure of the minor, i.e. A2 module, is given in the study guide (in Finnish chapter 2.7.5, page 47).

The A2 module has a compulsory course of T-76.4115 Software project I. If student has included this course to his/her major, it can be replased with on of the following courses: T-76.5115 Software project II, T-110.5130 Mobile systems programming or T-110.5140 Network Application Frameworks.

Doctoral students - Telecommunications software as research area

Current

Our research agenda covers broadly the state-of-the art Internet technologies and security from various angles. A large number of doctoral students working in industry have selected Telecommunications software as their main research field. Doctoral studies call for lots of energy and determined mindset, thus, it is important that the students select such research topics for which they have deep passion. We have a weekly seminar for our doctoral students (Friday's, 15:00, T-110.7190) in which the doctoral students may present their own research ideas and initial results. These interactive sessions can be helpful to crystallize the actual research problems. In addition, we have a longer doctoral seminar every semester typically followed by a sauna-evening.
