Seminar on Internetworking

Introduction on the topics

Residential and virtual home environments

Virtual Home Environment is a concept defined by the 3rd Generation Partnersip Project. It aims at a personal service environment, which could be presented to he mobile user over a diversity of terminals and access networks while preserving the familiar look and feel.

Residential networks with visions of active home appliances have inspired the researches for several years. As the Internet access has become common in households, digital TV is commercially available and GPRS modems targeted at embedded solutions exist, there might potential to develop a useful and appealing service scenario for home users.

In this seminar we study both the VHE concept and home networks. The overall target is to study the two topics from the consumer point of view, taking the perspective of a private person or a family member. We will also study and discuss whether the VHE concept and the residential network services have any impact to each other and whether they could be combined to create an additional value to the user.

Most of the papers produced will concentrate on a topic relevant in only one of the aformentioned areas. However, a discussion on the mixed scenario is encouraged during the workshop.
