Development of backbone technologies

• We’ll have a look at the evolution of corporate network backbone technologies from a telco perspective

• As a case study, we’ll have a look at the evolution of Telecom Finland’s (now Sonera) DataNet:

  • Router based layer-3 backbone in 1988/1989
  • Frame Relay in August 1991
  • ATM backbone in the spring of 1993

• The reasons for these changes

• Practical experiences

• Some non-solutions that were examined:

  • X.25 - the old technology that had to be dethroned
  • IEEE 802.6 DQDB MAN / SMDS
  • FDDI (maybe still in use?)
