UMTS
In a global scene, the ITU-T and ITU-R are responsible
of the development work of the next generation mobile
telephone technology which is known as IMT-2000 (International
Mobile Telecommunications 2000).
The main goal of the standardization work is to integrate
the existing digital mobile network technologies under
a single, world-wide standard.
The 3rd generation system designed by the ITU was known as
FPLMTS (Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunication System)
In Europe, the EU is controlling the development work of a 3rd
generation system called UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecom-
munications System) and standardized by ETSI.
