Computing Education Research

Computing education research is the main context of our work. Most work is related to teaching and learning programming in different levels.

Our research includes several subareas.

  • We investigate students' understandings and experiences of programming concepts and processes applying both qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • We investigate teacher's and other stake holder's conceptions of the teaching and learning process.
  • We develop specialized tools to support teaching and learning programming, including automatic assessment and feedback tools, algorithm animation and simulation tools, program animation and simulation tools.
  • We carry out large scale evaluation studies to investigate the effect of the tools on students' learning results and studying process.

The tools and novel methods of teaching are directly applied to programming courses on various levels at Department of Computer Science and Engineering. As the programming courses are very large with hundreds of students, we have excellent possibilities to gather authentic data for research.
