Call for participation

T-106.5550 Research Methods
Research Methods in Engineering Education Research (5 cr/ECTS)

PhD course organized by Department of Computer Science and
Engineering, Aalto University School of Science and Technology,
Finland

Course objectives

The research methods course will concentrate on analyzing Engineering
Education Research (EER) literature. EER will be interpreted in the
course context in a broad sense, so that it includes not only
educational research in technology education but also in nearby
fields, like computing education, mathematics education, physics
education and chemistry education, as well as educational technology.

The goal is to study, how the research has been carried out and how
various research approaches have been applied. Specifically the
course will seek answers to how the research questions have been
formulated, what kind of research have been applied - how and why,
what kind of results have been achieved and in which ways the results
have been evaluated critically.

Based on this inquiry the participants will elaborate their own research plan.

Participants

The course is directed for doctoral level students and researchers
working in the fields of engineering education. However, students
from other fields of science and engineering may also find the course
interesting and fit for their needs. Students close to graduating as
MSc, for example, working with their MSc thesis project may also
enroll. The course is beneficial especially to students who are
starting their research projects.

At most 12 students are accepted, and in case of more people
enrolling, preference is given to students working in engineering
education research / educational technology.

Schedule

The course is organized in four intensive full working days
interleaving with pre- and home assignments. Active lecture
attendance is required. The intensive days will take place on
February 19th, March 26th, April 23rd and May 21st.

Practicalities

Students from other Finnish universities are asked to apply for
flexible study rights (JOO). For further information, see the course
home page. The course is free of charge for students from other
countries.

Registration and further questions

Note. This course is separate from the larger international EER
research training course, which is
running in 2010 (http://www.it.uu.se/research/group/upcerg/EER/).
There is clear
overlap - so students who will participate the larger course should
not apply on this course.
