ReflekTori 2007

3 - 4 th December 2007, Espoo, Finland

Second Call for Papers

The deadline for submissions has been extended.
The new deadline is 27.8.2007. Previous
submissions can be revised by the new deadline.
Please notify in the submission form, if you
revise a paper.

General

Engineering education is a field combining
technical expertise with pedagogical practices
and educational research. The rapid pace of
technological development places increasing
demands on educators to adapt to new pedagogical
approaches, such as student centered education.
Educators in technical universities face a
constant challenge to develop the content and
form of their education to match the changing
technology and education environment. Therefore
collaboration and sharing thoughts and efforts to
tackle current pedagogical problems is needed.

The second ReflekTori conference will continue
along the lines of the first ReflekTori, which
was organized in 2005. The conference invites
educational practitioners, developers and
researchers in engineering education to come
together to discuss relevant issues in technology
education, express new ideas, methods and tools
to support education and to enjoy reflecting upon
our own disciplines.

The conference will be organized by Helsinki
University of Technology (TKK) in December 2007,
in collaboration with IEEE Nordic Education
Society Chapter. We invite teachers, researchers,
pedagogical developers and students working with
the development of pedagogical practices or
theory in the field of engineering education to
submit papers.

Topics

Original submissions in all areas related to the
conference theme are invited. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:

o Pedagogy and engineering education (e.g.
curriculum design, teaching methods, classroom
        or laboratory practices, assessment)
o Understanding student learning
o ICT -supported engineering education
(e.g. specialized software or hardware
        environments for engineering education,
tools for visualization or concretization,
interactive learning environments, distance learning settings)
o Professional practices and education
o Ethics and engineering education
o Engineering education and society
o "Engineering is fun" - recruitment,
retention, gender issues in engineering education
o Engineering sciences as a discipline

Submission categories

Research paper

Full papers of high quality, describing an
unpublished, original piece of research related
to the conference theme, presenting novel
results, methods, tools, or interpretations that
contribute to solid, theoretically anchored
research. Presentation duration in the symposium:
25 minutes presentation + 5 minutes discussion
with audience.

Research papers are mainly evaluated by the
relevance and quality of the research. Research
papers will be refereed by the program committee.
The research papers have be to written in
English, and accepted presentations will be given
in English. Max 8 pages.

Practice paper

Practice papers describe work on methods, tools
or techniques for learning or instruction in
engineering education, which have been successful
in practice and/or interesting to a wider
audience and which are motivated by the
pedagogical needs of teaching engineering. The
papers should present interesting or new ideas
and argue their pros and cons in practical
education. Presentation duration in the
symposium: 15 minutes presentation + 15 minutes
discussion with audience.

Practice papers should be submitted as extended
abstracts that summarize the main points. They
can be written either in Finnish or English. The
language choice indicates that the presentation
will be given in the same language. Max 2 pages.

Workshop paper

Workshop papers present new ideas, themes,
observations or questions that the authors wish
to discuss and develop further in a workshop
during the conference. Some examples of such
themes could be new assessment practices,
collaboration over disciplinary borders,
organization of engineering education, or gender
issues. The workshop paper must discuss the aim
and importance of the theme, as well as a plan
for carrying out the workshop. The plan should
include the goal of the workshop, to whom the
workshop is intended to, whether the number of
participants is limited, and the planned outcome.
Workshop duration in the symposium: 1,5 or 3
hours.

Workshop papers should be submitted as extended
abstracts that summarize the main points. They
can be written either in Finnish or English. The
language choice indicates that the workshop will
be using the same language. Max 2 pages.

Important dates

Submissions due: 27th of August (EXTENDED)
Notification of acceptance: 17th of September
Final versions: 7th of October
Conference: 3rd and 4th of December

Submission information

All papers accepted to ReflekTori will be
published in the symposium proceeding (paper and
electronic). For instructions for writing and
sending final versions, see conference web site
in June 2007.
