Data Communications Software in general
Data Communications Software consists of two research and educational focus areas:
- Internet technologies, application development in internet, network architectures (prof. Antti Ylä-Jääski)
- Security in distributed systems (prof. Tuomas Aura)
Our research focus is on the evolution of the Internet technologies as well as on the design, implementation, and verification of IP based systems. In addition to Internet technologies, we address mobile networks and specifically the development of applications and services in heterogeneous network environments. Focal areas for both Internet and mobile networks are security, service architectures and subjects related to service management such as mobility, quality-of-service, and charging. In security we are focusing on privacy, trust, trust federation and identity management.
Our research is carried out in projects, such as InfraHIP II, Trustworthy Internet, NomAP (Nomadic Applications Demonstrator), IPOS (Information Processing in Overlay Systems). Prof. Sasu Tarkoma is the senior research scientist.
Main sources of research funding include Tekes and industry partners, European Union, Academy of Finland and HIIT.
Our international collaboration includes University of California at Berkeley in USA, Swedish Institute of Computer Science (SICS) in Sweden, Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications (BUPT) in China, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) in India among others.

The full-time teaching personnel - in addition to the professors - includes Timo Kiravuo, Sakari Luukkainen, Sanna Suoranta and Matti Siekkinen.
