The Data Communications Software level 3 module focuses on the evolution and development of communication architectures, services, and their technologies. As the Internet has established itself as the leading communications architecture, it is natural to concentrate on Internet technologies and on the applications, services and systems based on these. Similarly, the modern Web technologies for distributed services are covered. In addition to the Internet technologies, also mobile network technologies are discussed. Essential areas include applications and services and their management, for example mobility, security, quality of service and accounting. The focus from the computer science and engineering point of view is in service and middleware architectures and related technologies when developing applications for the Internet-based systems and mobile networks.
The learning goal of this module is to know the fundamental technologies and design principles of communications networks, internet and mobile systems including applications, services and service management, to develop new communications network solutions, service platforms and service architectures, and to be able to apply modern design, development and implementation principles in research and development of communications networks and systems.
